The Old Manor has been in the Sood family since 1928, built when the first apple saplings came to Kotgarh. We have kept the deodar beams, the fireplaces and the library, and added hot water and good coffee. Breakfast is on the veranda, looking down the Sutlej valley.

Kotgarh and neighbouring Thanedar are the birthplace of the Himalayan apple industry, planted by the American missionary Samuel Stokes a century ago. It is a landscape of terraced orchards, old stone churches and colonial-era estate houses at around 2,000 m, an hour and a half beyond Shimla and a world away from it. Spring is blossom; autumn is harvest and the best light of the year.

Shimla on the toy train, or Kalka.
By road
Shimla to Narkanda on NH5, then down to Kotgarh — about 2.5 hours from Shimla, on good tarmac the whole way.

When to come

April for apple blossom across the whole hillside. September and October for the harvest and the clearest views to the Shrikhand range. Winter is crisp and quiet with occasional snow; the house has fireplaces in every room. Peak summer is pleasant but busier with Shimla weekenders.

The original 1920s study, and still the best room in the house. A working fireplace, the family bookshelves left exactly as they were, and two deep armchairs that have outlasted three generations. The bed is a restored four-poster with an entirely new mattress — we were sentimental about the frame, not about your back. The bathroom was added in 2019 and is thoroughly modern. Wood is stacked by the hearth and lit each evening from October through March.

Orchard Room

A tall-ceilinged room on the ground floor that opens straight into the apple orchard — in late September you can pick fruit from the doorway. One double bed and one single, so it takes a couple with a child comfortably. High sash windows on two sides make it the brightest room in the manor, and the coolest one in summer. In blossom season — roughly the second and third weeks of April — this is the room to ask for.

The Veranda Room

The Veranda Room

The corner room on the first floor, with exposed deodar beams and its own stretch of the wraparound veranda — twelve feet of it, two chairs and a table, screened off from the rest of the house. This is where guests end up reading the whole afternoon. The view runs south over the terraces, and as far as the Shrikhand range on a clear day. Tea is brought up at four unless you tell us not to.
